Over 60% of global employment is informal

What is PemPem?

PemPem builds a mobile-based Social ERP, meaning a cloud-based, mobile network that enables participants of informal supply chains (palm oil in Indonesia, for now) to interact digitally. We support a transition out of the informal, cash-based economy into a digital, technology-based one that brings greater efficiency and profit to the value chain, traceability to the supply chain, and sustainability to the sector.

Why the informal economy?

60% of global employment is informal, which means that a large fraction of the global population does not have access to digital tools and organizational structures that help organizations thrive in today’s world. This comes with many downstream consequences, including lack of financial inclusion, a growing digital divide, and no supply chain transparency. PemPem aims to close this digital and organizational divide through the world-class mobile-based social ERP tools it develops.

Why Social ERP?

Individuals in the informal economy often operate as micro-organizations or entrepreneurs, and relationships with other micro-organizations are a fundamental part of their operating model. Our mobile-based ERP tools are therefore developed to operate in a relational network, rendering PemPem’s ERP tools “Social.”

The Social ERP framework implies that PemPem automatically collects data on transactions across the informal economy. PemPem users can use this data, for example, to generate income histories and credit histories, enabling them to apply for a bank account and bank loans through our FinTech partners. PemPem users can also use this data to establish the origins of their products, and provide information to their buyers (often multinational companies) about the origins of products they buy. As such, PemPem provides supply chain transparency and new insights on informal economies as a by-product.
